Communication Therapy

Communication therapy plays a vital role in the rehabilitation process. From the first meeting between the patient and their medical team through the eventual return to the community, continuing rehabilitation and recreating a meaningful life, communication therapy is of critical importance. For this reason, our team of professional communication therapists are a main force in the multi-faceted therapeutic routine at the Rehabilitative Medical Center and in our professional clinics.

Communication therapists factor into all areas of care and rehabilitation at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran including in-hospital orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation, day patient services, outpatient services, rehabilitation village residential units and the special education school. Additionally, for several years children of area residents have been referred to ADI for communication therapy by Israeli HMOs. The availability of high-quality communication treatments within a close geographical proximity relieves Negev families from the need to travel long distances for subsidized care or take on the financial burden of private therapeutic treatments.

Orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation patients receive individual treatment in our modern communication therapy rooms as part of their adapted rehabilitation program. We evaluate, diagnose and treat hearing, language and speech disorders and related issues of swallowing. Alternative communication systems are adapted and employed as needed, and hospital rooms contain the most current communication equipment available, providing patients and their families with relevant communication tools.

Accessibility for All – Better Communication

The Rehabilitative Medical Center places great value on communication therapy and integrates communication therapists into all areas of rehabilitation activity, working side-by-side with rehabilitation physicians, nursing teams and health-professions therapists such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, hydro-therapists and social workers. Communication therapists also provide internal training in alternative supportive communication to all staff members to facilitate better patient-staff communication and optimal care.

Communication therapists are involved in additional, no-less important features and processes within the Rehabilitative Medical Center. Thanks to meticulous planning on the part of our professional communications team, the entire medical center features a comprehensive cognitive and lingual accessibility strategy which ensures that people of all abilities can comfortably navigate their way around the premises. Tactile embossed signage, paintings, color schemes and special mapping provide optimal orientation. An accessible, voice-guided navigations system for smart phones is currently in the planning stages with implementation scheduled for the near future. Each patient’s individual treatment plan is formed to ensure prime possibilities for accessible information.

Providing Optimal Communication Tools for Patients and Their Environment

Patients discharged from full hospitalization and transferred to day patient rehabilitation services continue treatment in the communication therapy department, happy to see familiar faces and continue a program consistent with the originally scheduled therapy. Communication professionals instruct patients’ families in the use of supportive alternative communication, consistent with their philosophy of the importance of optimal communication in facilitating a return to meaningful community life.

Communication therapists at the Rehabilitation Medical Center enjoy the opportunity to stand in the forefront of innovation and development in their chosen profession thanks to the pioneering research taking place at the center. Likewise, we are proud that our center draws communication therapy students from numerous centers of higher education who choose to do their internship at our center. In so doing, we serve our part in laying the foundations for a future generation of therapists who will help ease the nationwide distress in this challenging and understaffed field, providing them with prospects for professional advancement and employment in surroundings imbued with a unique mission.

We believe it is our responsibility to set an example for the kind of top-rate communication that will enhance integration of people with disabilities into society. Our mission is to provide every patient with maximum tools and opportunities to integrate into the community and return to the most active and meaningful life possible.
