The Lillian and David E. Feldman Research Center for Rehabilitation Sciences at the Kaylie Rehabilitation Medical Center at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran works with academics to advance research by initiating, planning and funding clinical research.

The Feldman Research Center aspires to provide a broad organizational infrastructure that will facilitate research and the publication of research findings for interested clinical researchers associated with the Kaylie Rehabilitation Medical Center (doctors, nurses, health-professions and medically-related professionals) as well as researcher partners from other sectors. As part of its quest to spawn significant technological achievements for the benefit of people with disabilities and rehabilitation patients worldwide, the original vision of the ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran Rehabilitation Village attaches great importance to such research activity.

Natural History of Stroke

Within the scope of this project, 200 sets of longitudinal physiological and cognitive data sets have been taken from 180 recruited stroke rehabilitation patients.

The original research project has led to additional studies including studies on High Density Controllability, Post-stroke Accuracy in Walking and The Role of the Reticulospinal Tract in Stroke Recovery. These studies are in conjunction with Ben Gurion University.

Goals
The aim of the study is to develop and evaluate a new objective method for measuring proprioceptive acuity in the lower limb, based on the brain’s automatic response to joint movement, in order to enable more accurate diagnosis and to support targeted rehabilitation.

Summary

Proprioception – the sense of body position and movement – is essential for motor control and everyday functioning. Proprioceptive impairments are common in orthopedic and neurological conditions, yet there is currently no reliable and objective clinical tool for their accurate assessment. Existing evaluations largely rely on subjective reports and tasks that are not sufficiently sensitive, leading to under- or misdiagnosis of proprioceptive deficits.

This study aims to develop an innovative and objective approach to assessing proprioception in the lower limb, based on the brain’s automatic, unconscious response to a change in joint position. Adults with suspected sensory impairment of the lower limb will be examined alongside healthy participants, with muscle activity and movement patterns measured during active and passive movement of the knee.

The expected findings may enable more accurate identification of proprioceptive impairments, support better-targeted rehabilitation programs, and provide a foundation for the development of practical clinical assessment tools that can be readily implemented in rehabilitation centers and hospitals.

Developing assistive rehabilitation technology (a mechanical system attached to the hand) controlled according to the principles of the Controllability measure.

The purpose of the study is to examine the unique contribution of a learning kitchen as a rehabilitation tool, and to examine how the activity of cooking and preparing food can support the rehabilitation process, strengthen functional independence, and influence the sense of competence, health, and quality of life.

Summary

The study will take place in the Day Rehabilitation Unit at Adi Negev – Nachalat Eran and will involve adults aged 18 and older coping with a wide range of medical conditions, After prolonged hospitalizations. These patients face significant challenges, particularly the transition back home and the need to regain independence in everyday activities. The aim of the study is to examine the unique contribution of a teaching kitchen as a rehabilitative tool and to explore how cooking and food preparation can support the rehabilitation process, enhance functional independence, and positively influence participants’ sense of capability, health, and quality of life. Approximately 45 patients will participate in the study and will be assigned to a study group and two comparison groups in order to examine the added value of different rehabilitative approaches. The findings are expected to contribute to a better understanding of how meaningful daily activities, such as cooking, can serve as effective tools in day rehabilitation settings.
